I Was Born To Play Aamir – Rajeev Khandelwal

Having proven his acting mettle on the small screen, Rajeev Khandelwal, better known as ‘Sujal’ of ‘Kahin to hoga’ fame is gearing up to scorch the silver screen now.

UTV’s ‘Aamir’, a psychological thriller, marks his debut film. No lead actress, no supporting cast, no item numbers, no opulent locations… Rajeev is shouldering a huge responsibility in his very first film.

The quintessential chocolate boy of TV is ecstatic and unstoppable in conversation with TWF correspondent Swati R Chaudhary…

How would you describe your debut film Aamir?

Aamir is a complete Bollywood commercial thriller. It gives out a message and it is not one of those run-of-the-mill thrillers. You would be forced to think. It’s a battle of ideologies. It’s a psychological thriller.

There are no superstars, larger than life locations or supporting cast to sell the film. Aamir is the story of an average middle class Indian. Be prepared for a hangover!

Tell us about your character in the film?
I am playing Aamir Ali in the film. It’s about what normal average middle class Indians face in this country, who don’t have anything to do with politics or religious issues but how they directly or indirectly get involved into it.

Rajeev is the first Assistant Director for “Aamir”!

Rajeev Khandelwal adds another feather to his cap with his debut film, UTV Spotboy’s Aamir. Apart from being the lead actor in his first film, he also gets an official credit as the first Assistant director of the film.

Director Rajkumar Gupta & producer Vikas Behl have decided to give Rajeev the official credit of being the First Asst. Director of the film. Says Rajkumar, ” Rajeev was always proactive about everything that was happening on the sets, and since we were shooting in the real locations of Mumbai with the hidden cameras on the streets Rajeev never got the opportunity of using vanity vans. He was himself suppose to take care of his make up, clothes etc. and most of the time he used to do his make up in auto rickshaws and taxis. Even when he had a vanity van, he never disconnected himself from rest of the cast and was on the sets looking after various things. He took charge of the continuity of the film with his dressing and makeup and even did his own clap sometimes…

For few scenes where we were shooting on the roads, in taxi, he even held the reflector in his hands and did his scene. Since the Asst. Director of films handles these responsibilities, we decided to endow him with the First AD’s title for Aamir. He was very passionate about each and every thing related to the film, being a first time director myself, I couldn’t have asked for a better debutant for my film than Rajeev.”

Rajeev: Interview!

• You are making an unconventional debut in an action film with no heroine. Why?
Is there anything safe or conventional? I wanted to do a film which at the end of the day appeals to me. I got all kind of offers but nothing which I could even sleep over thinking. When I got Aamir, I knew that I had to do it. I think it helps me doing an unconventional debut. My life becomes easier and opens new boundaries for me.
