UNSAFE But Still SECURE – Rajeev Khandelwal

He was the poster boy of television, starring in Balaji serials and breaking many hearts. But then Rajeev Khandelwal “wanted to grow in life”, expand his range, and so he quit TV to make the journey to the big screen. After reading a lot of scripts, he settled for a rather “unsafe” film for his debut. He opted for UTV Spotboy’s Aamir, directed by Rajkumar Gupta, who assisted Anurag Kashyap in his films, and got into the character of an ordinary guy caught in extraordinary circumstances by shooting without makeup. Ahead of the May 16 release, Khandelwal speaks to Sudipta Datta on the switch from television to the big screen, why he is uncomfortable with the studio model and the dramatic changes sweeping the film industry.

Excerpts:

Why did you choose to shift from TV to the big screen?

I had to grow in life, which is a pretty human instinct. I wanted to expand my range, experiment. There are so many dreams that I have, so I had to begin somewhere.

Is Aamir the perfect debut film?

I heard plenty of scripts but none I wanted to be a part of. Aamir is a call of your heart. I agree a newcomer would want to do a safe film which Aamir is not. But when I read the script, I realised that if it could be translated into a film, then we would have achieved something.

How was the experience?

I always find glitches in my experience but I really enjoyed making the film. It’s the story of an ordinary boy caught in extraordinary circumstances. It couldn’t have been a better debut.

What are you doing next?

I Was Born To Play Aamir – Rajeev Khandelwal

Having proven his acting mettle on the small screen, Rajeev Khandelwal, better known as ‘Sujal’ of ‘Kahin to hoga’ fame is gearing up to scorch the silver screen now.

UTV’s ‘Aamir’, a psychological thriller, marks his debut film. No lead actress, no supporting cast, no item numbers, no opulent locations… Rajeev is shouldering a huge responsibility in his very first film.

The quintessential chocolate boy of TV is ecstatic and unstoppable in conversation with TWF correspondent Swati R Chaudhary…

How would you describe your debut film Aamir?

Aamir is a complete Bollywood commercial thriller. It gives out a message and it is not one of those run-of-the-mill thrillers. You would be forced to think. It’s a battle of ideologies. It’s a psychological thriller.

There are no superstars, larger than life locations or supporting cast to sell the film. Aamir is the story of an average middle class Indian. Be prepared for a hangover!

Tell us about your character in the film?
I am playing Aamir Ali in the film. It’s about what normal average middle class Indians face in this country, who don’t have anything to do with politics or religious issues but how they directly or indirectly get involved into it.

Rajeev is the first Assistant Director for “Aamir”!

Rajeev Khandelwal adds another feather to his cap with his debut film, UTV Spotboy’s Aamir. Apart from being the lead actor in his first film, he also gets an official credit as the first Assistant director of the film.

Director Rajkumar Gupta & producer Vikas Behl have decided to give Rajeev the official credit of being the First Asst. Director of the film. Says Rajkumar, ” Rajeev was always proactive about everything that was happening on the sets, and since we were shooting in the real locations of Mumbai with the hidden cameras on the streets Rajeev never got the opportunity of using vanity vans. He was himself suppose to take care of his make up, clothes etc. and most of the time he used to do his make up in auto rickshaws and taxis. Even when he had a vanity van, he never disconnected himself from rest of the cast and was on the sets looking after various things. He took charge of the continuity of the film with his dressing and makeup and even did his own clap sometimes…

For few scenes where we were shooting on the roads, in taxi, he even held the reflector in his hands and did his scene. Since the Asst. Director of films handles these responsibilities, we decided to endow him with the First AD’s title for Aamir. He was very passionate about each and every thing related to the film, being a first time director myself, I couldn’t have asked for a better debutant for my film than Rajeev.”

Big Dreams – Rajeev Khandelwal

Rajeev Khandelwal has already conquered many hearts as television’s most adorable hero. Now, he takes his first step to don the big screen. The small screen star, who a few months back opted out of SAB TV’s popular Left Right Left, will act in debutant Raj Kumar Gupta’s film Amir.

“I’ve been getting scripts for the last couple of years. This is the most exciting project that I came across,” says Khandelwal, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday. “It’s a realistic story and I’m playing a very believable character.”

Amir—to be produced by Spotboy, an arm of UTV Motion Pictures—tells the story of a Muslim professional who lands in Mumbai from London, only to be entangled in a series of hassles. “I’m playing a middleclass guy who faces the most unexpected situation. The movie is a fast-paced thriller,” adds Khandelwal, who had signed Amir even before UTV was roped in as a producer.
